Inaugural Alliance Scotland Council and Forum Meeting

Today sees the inaugural meetings of both the Alliance Scotland Council, and Forum.  These newly established groups are central to the new models developed by the Alliance Scotland to foster collaboration amongst SSCs and between SSCs and stakeholder bodies.

The Alliance Scotland Council is chaired by Jack Matthews (CEO, Improve Ltd); its membership includes the chairs of the Alliance Scotland Strategic Groups and the Acting Alliance Scotland Director, Jacqui Hepburn.  The Scottish Government, Skills Development Scotland, SQA and the Scottish Funding Council each have accepted observer membership.

The Alliance Scotland Forum, also chaired by Jack Matthews, provides an opportunity for each of the 25 SSC Scottish leads to meet and share information on recent activity across the strategic groups.

Thoughts on the Future for Scottish HEIs

The Universities Taskforce - set up to examine the future role and shape of Scotland's universities - has proposed major modernisation of the relationship between the Scottish Government, Scottish Funding Council and Scotland's universities.

It has also proposed modernisation of the way in which universities are funded, in its report, published for consultation this week.

MA Awards Categories Announced

Following last week's announcement regarding the MA Awards 2008. Skills Development Scotland has released details of the awards categories. The categories are as follows: Apprentice of the year - traditional sector; Apprentice of the year - non-traditional sector; Employer (small, medium and large businesses); employees (small, medium and large businesses); Training Provider; Apprentice - outstanding achievement, and Partnership. Further details and information on the application process shall be posted shortly.

International Education Conference Held in Scotland

The annual Post-Secondary International Network (PIN) conference took place in Scotland this week. The series of events and seminar sessions were hosted by Adam Smith College in locations across the country. The PIN seeks to improve the ways in which further education providers serve their local communities, whilst recognising that community’s place within a national and international environment. The Alliance Scotland was pleased to have the opportunity to describe to the international delegation how SSCs work closely with Scotland’s Colleges, and employers to develop provision to meet the skills needs of the local and national population. Maths and English Support for Playworkers

SkillsActive has developed a toolkit that offers practical and useful information to help playwork employers think about how they can support their staff to develop their English and maths skills.

The toolkit is an invaluable resource to playwork employers and covers areas like; what the benefits are when playworkers improve their English and maths skills and how employers can set up, promote, evaluate and engage staff in the training. Click here to view a news release and access the tool.

Empowerment Through Learning

The Scottish Trades Union Congress Annual Youth Conference will take place on 28 June in Perth. The theme of this year's conference is Empowering Young Workers Through Learning. Health Protection Standards

Skills for Health has launched a consultation to support the development of new National Occupational Standards (NOS) for health protection.  The NOS have been developed for specific activities in health protection, concerning: assessing risks to health and wellbeing, communicating risks, taking action to prevent or control risks and taking action during incidents.  To access the online consultation click here

European Skills Forecast

The European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP) has published the results of its research to provide a consistent and comprehensive medium-term forecast of skills needs across the whole of Europe.  The report develops macroeconomic projections and alternative scenarios for each Member State, and aggregate results at European level. It provides data on future employment developments by economic sector, occupation and qualification until 2015 and uses comparative data for all Member States.  More...
